Which battery to choose

Nothing warms you up in winter like a hot battery. Do you remember those old Soviet cast batteries, rough, with burrs, eternally dusty and painted with oil paint? Nowadays, such batteries are almost impossible to find in homes: classic Soviet brutal batteries were cheap enough, but very heavy, water-intensive, and too rough to install.

Winged metal radiators

The most popular batteries today are made of aluminum alloys. This material is lightweight, pours well, is processed, is cheap enough, and conducts heat well. Primary or recycled aluminum can be used as the raw material for future batteries. The first one, of course, is the purest, has a more stable composition and properties. Batteries made of recycled aluminum are usually several times cheaper and rougher than radiators made of primary aluminum: they have a higher safety margin, because the material composition is not ideal and this can cause problems during operation.

All modern heating radiators are quite easy to install. There is a left thread on one side of the radiator, and a right thread on the other side. The batteries are easy and quick to install, without smearing with oil paints and smelly tow.

By the way, aluminum is not the most successful material for working with hot liquids under pressure. Pure aluminum loses its oxide film under pressure and in hot water (for which aluminum is so famous) and when the pressure is released, it begins to actively oxidize. To prevent aluminum from oxidizing, it is coated with special polymers to minimize the area of contact with hot liquid.

Steel radiator

This heating device consists of sandwiches made of stamped metal sheets. Channels are pressed out on both sheets with a mirror stamp, and then these sheets are welded together. It turns out to be a flat two-layer plate, in which there is a channel for the movement of the carrier.

These batteries are made of low carbon sheet steel. As you can see, the manufacturing scheme is such that the battery can be made as large as a steel sheet. That is, the heating device can be given almost any shape, and the power can be easily increased by the number of layers. A thin steel sheet gives them another property: low inertia. The steel battery quickly changes its temperature, almost instantly reacts to the operation of the thermostat. A very large area gives a high heat transfer coefficient.

Steel radiators do not tolerate water hammer, a hydraulic effect that occurs with a sharp increase in pressure in the system. Our domestic heating regime is also difficult for them, when the coolant drains from the system after the heating season. The connection of a steel radiator with the atmosphere leads to very rapid corrosion: a steel radiator can withstand 2-3 years in this mode.

Bimetallic radiators

These are hybrid radiators that combine the properties and features of both aluminum and steel alloys. According to their characteristics, they are the most reliable, durable and balanced. They are the most expensive of all, they are similar to other types in terms of ease of installation.

Radiators have two main characteristics: operating pressure and heat transfer coefficient. A separate article is the thermal power: it depends mainly on the area of the battery that is in contact with the indoor air.

Operating pressure is the coolant supply pressure that the radiator can withstand for a long time without bursting. Most modern models can operate for a long time at a pressure of 16-24 atmospheres.

The heat transfer coefficient (although heat transfer is usually indicated) characterizes how the battery releases heat from the coolant. T is usually indicated, i.e. the temperature difference at the inlet and outlet of the heat carrier from the radiator. The higher this value, the more heat from the coolant remains in the room. The standard value of T is 70-80 K (Kelvin).

Which radiator should I choose?

In terms of performance, almost all modern batteries are very similar. The difference is in aesthetic performance, service life, and cost difference. It is worth remembering that aluminum sections without internal coating and radiators made of sheet steel do not tolerate contact with air very well. Bimetallic ones are the most expensive, but the most durable. Cast-iron batteries are heavy to install, very metal-intensive, and inert in temperature.
